Surviving The Last Few Days of Winter Break With Kids

It’s that weird time of year when the holidays are over, but your kids are still at home on Christmas break for a few more days. If you’re anything like me you’re probably itching to start getting your house back in order and working on some of those New Year’s resolutions. But your kids are probably constantly saying “I’m bored” or “Can I have a snack?”, or they’re busy making one mess after another.

In my house, we’ve had a bit of an extended break since our kid’s last few days in class were optional (like since when were half days optional?). So we’ve been out of school for a little over 3 weeks now. Even with all the new toys, books, and new bikes my kids are getting a bit stir crazy.

So ive pulled out some of my old tricks to get my kids involved with the housework ive been trying to get done. So theyre not bored, my to-do list is steadily shrinking, and my sanity is still intact (for now).

Here’s a guide to some of my best tactics for involving your kids in your first-of-the-year clean-up.

Gamify Organization

Both of my boys love to play games; sports, video games, board games, etc. So one of the easiest ways to get them to help me put away Christmas decor is to turn it into a game. We use shatterproof ornaments so when we put those back into the box, I have my kids toss them like a basketball. Then once they get ten ornaments into the box, I give them a 15-minute screentime coupon.

These coupons can be exchanged for anything your kids want; be that snack coupons, Robucks or Zbucks, pizza nights, etc. Use my link above to customize your own and print them out, I promise your kids will love them!

I also use these as incentives for my kids to reorganize their rooms to find spots for all their new stuff from Christmas. While they’re organizing their rooms, I usually get some writing done or knock out one of my other tasks.

Storytime

With some of my more fragile ornaments or decorations, I tell my kids the story behind them as we are packing them away. My kids love to hear the stories behind handmade ornaments or special glass decorations. Even now that my kids have heard the stories a few times they still come up with more questions and we go even deeper into that decorations background.

It makes for a really special bonding time with my kids while they learn how to take care of the more fragile pieces. I also show them how to wrap them in newspaper or bubble wrap and pack them so they won’t be damaged.

Outdoor Fun

Have outdoor work to do? Try putting together a scavenger hunt for outdoor decorations or even trash. Make a list for each of your kiddos for decorations, trash, or other items you want to be cleaned up from the yard.

If you don’t really have any outdoor work to do, and just need a few minutes outside try making an obstacle course. This can help your kids get out some of their pent-up energy and you get some fresh air and time away from your to-do list.

Take a Day Off

I know, I know, Nicole this isnt exactly being productive. But really after a long break with kids and extended family all cooped up in the house, a day out could be just the break you need. Check facebooks event tab for fun kid friendly activities in your area.

If your area doesnt have much going on you can plan a trip to the library, a local park, or plan a playdate with friends. Just getting out of the house should be enough of a break to help rein in your kids pent up energy and get everyone back on track.

Goal Setting Session

If youre in the mood to start on some resolutions why not find out what your kiddos want to accomplish this year? Have everyone sit down at the kitchen table or in the living room and take turns talking about what they want to achieve this year.

Not only does this give you the oppertunity to teach your kids about setting and acheiving goals; It gives them a chance to see what your goals are and how you plan to achieve them.

Hang In There

Whether youre getting the kids involved in the holiday clean up, taking some time away from the house, or planning your year together, I hope you found something on my little list helpful. So dont worry momma youre doing great, and schedules will be back to normal before you know it!
